Construction
This project involved transforming a dedicated space into the Ark for Temple Emanu El. The greatest challenge wasn’t just the construction itself but crafting a narrative through the intricate details of the Ark. Every element had to contribute to telling a meaningful story—one that blended spiritual symbolism with artistic craftsmanship. Beyond the storytelling, the fabrication process presented numerous technical challenges that required innovative, never-before-used solutions.
The doors alone were monumental in scale—each one approximately 4 feet wide and 10 feet tall, weighing around 400 pounds. Designing and assembling such massive components demanded extreme precision and planning. One of the most visually striking features was the Tree of Life, which required nearly 20 layers of finish to achieve a realistic bronzed bark texture.
Integrating lighting also posed a serious challenge. The LED panels used were only available in 8-foot lengths, which led the team to develop creative blending techniques using matte acetate and other materials to make the seams disappear. In addition, the door fronts were coated with a translucent, metallic plaster that gave them an alabaster-like appearance, although it was nearly impossible to capture its beauty in photographs.
Symbolism played a vital role throughout the design. A constellation of CNC-machined stars—silver and bronze—was arranged in a specific pattern on a hand-troweled plaster surface. This celestial design was inspired by the silhouettes of two cherubim located within the Ark itself, turning an abstract concept into a tangible visual story.
Equally important were the functional aspects, such as the Torah cradles. Given the height of the Ark and the weight of the Torah scrolls, the team developed a mechanism using hidden pivots and sliding systems that allowed each Torah to be moved forward easily and safely. Magnetic locks ensured the cradles stayed firmly in place, with industrial parts discreetly finished using custom bronze knobs.
In the end, this was not simply a construction project—it was a creative and spiritual journey. It brought together art, engineering, tradition, and innovation to create a sacred object that tells a profound story, both in its structure and its soul.
